After 19 days of heavy fighting, heavy losses of human life, gaunt,
weary, hollow-eyed American soldiers walked down Hill 660. Those that
were still alive and able to walk that is, otherwise they were carried
out on a stretcher. This was the case for Michael Maida.

In today's age where my son and I exchanged several e-mails this
morning between Italy, Texas and Iraq, and in the age where he was able
to call his mother on Tuesday, it's hard for us to realize what it was
like over 60 years ago as this nation was in a terrible struggle around
the world. Service members and family members waited for and
cherished each letter, newsreels at the movies brought information to
American cities, and the only "breaking news" came over the radio.
